Coal Mine Field Trip
On Wednesday the 1st of September we went to the New Vale Coal Mine. It was cool being inside an opencast pit to see the coal seams and over burden (dirt & soil).
We liked the big dump trucks, the giant digger and looking for tree resin, Josh even found a silver piece. There can sometimes still be wood found amongst the coal as it hasn’t been covered for long enough.
We found out that they crush 150 tonnes an hour into different sizes. They spread water on tracks to settle the coal dust. The mine water gets pumped into a settling pond so it doesn’t pollute the local waterways.
As well as people working to get the coal they have 9 mechanics to fix the machinery.
The coal mine was spectacular, thank you to Ant for showing us around and telling us about how the mine works.
